The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was an American long-range escort and night fighter of the Second World War and the post-war period. The flight of the plane took place in 1945, and its service in the US Air Force lasted from 1946-1953. In total, about 270 aircraft of this type were built. The drive - in the F-82 G version - was provided by two Allison V-1710 engines with a power of 1600 HP each. The aircraft's on-board armament consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns. The machine could also carry bomb loads of up to 454 kilograms. The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was created by combining two specially adapted fuselages of the P-51 Mustang aircraft. It was assumed that the new plane would have a much greater range than the basic version of the Mustang and would be able to perform the tasks of a night fighter. Several versions of this unusual aircraft were developed in the course of production, including the following models: F-82B (originally planned production version), F-82C (night fighter version with SCR-720 radar) or F-82E (escort fighter). The US Air Force was the only user of the F-82 Twin Mustangs.
