ARVN Rangers (Vietnamese Biet Dong Quan) are light infantry units serving in the South Vietnamese armed forces during the Vietnam War (1964 / 1965-1975). The genesis of this formation dates back to the mid-1950s, and its dynamic development took place during the Vietnam War. ARVN Rangers were organized into battalions, the number of which reached 54 at the end of the war. These troops were trained by American specialists, and the recruits underwent demanding training in which they acquired mainly the techniques of fighting in the jungle and in mountainous terrain. ARVN Rangers units were used primarily for long-distance reconnaissance, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, but also for broadly understood anti-partisan activities. However, they were successfully used in regular battles with North Vietnamese troops. It is fairly widely accepted that the ARVN Rangers were the most effective and highly combat-worthy units of the South Vietnamese Army.
