The Douglas DC-5 was an American passenger and transport aircraft from the Second World War. The first prototypes of the machine were created in 1939, and serial production began shortly after, ending with the production of only 12 aircraft of this type. The drive was provided by two radial motors Wright GR-1820-F62, 900 HP each . The plane could reach a maximum speed of 370 km / h, and its maximum range was 2,575 kilometers. The machine did not have a fixed armament. The Douglas DC-5 was created as part of the bottom-up initiative of the Douglas company, which wanted to supplement its commercial offer with an aircraft capable of taking on board up to 18-2 passengers on routes shorter than the DC-3 or DC-4 planes of the same manufacturer. The machine featured a rarely seen three-support chassis and a high wing system. However, until the outbreak of World War II, Douglas managed to build only 4 aircraft of this type, which were delivered to the Dutch KLM airlines. They went to the Dutch East Indies, where in 1942 one machine of this type was captured by the Japanese and later served as a transport plane. During World War II, the Douglas company developed two versions of this aircraft: R3D-1 (a type designed for the US Navy) and R3D-2 (a version adapted to the transport of paratroopers), but only a few copies of each version were created. By 1949, all Douglas DC-5s were decommissioned.
