Fat Man is the code name for an American nuclear bomb that was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The length of the bomb was 330 cm with a diameter of 150 centimeters. However, its weight reached approx. 4,650 kilograms. The bomb detonation force was approximately 20-21 kilotons. It is worth adding that the weight of the plutonium charge used in this bomb was about 6.4 kilograms. The Fat Man nuclear bomb (similar to the Little Boy bomb) was created as a result of a research program code-named Manhattan, initiated in 1942, which is often considered the most expensive military program in the history of World War II. Of course, its main goal was to create an atomic bomb. The Fat Man bomb, unlike the Little Boy bomb, had a plutonium nuclear charge. Interestingly, scientists participating in the Manhattan project initially assumed that the strength of the Fat Man bomb explosion would be smaller than that of the Little Boy bomb - but the opposite happened. The Fat Man bomb drop was made from a Boeing B-29 aircraft with its own name "Bockscar", commanded by Maj. Charles W. Sweeney at 11:02 am local time. It is estimated that approximately 40,000 Nagasaki residents died in the first 24 hours after the airdrop, and a further 40,000-50,000 people died over the next few years as a result of radiation sickness.
