The RWD-17 was a Polish training and aerobatic aircraft of a mixed structure, in the high-wing configuration, with a fixed landing gear. The drive in the basic version was provided by a single engine Walter Major with a power of 130 hp. The flight of the prototype took place in 1937, and in the years 1938-1939 serial production continued, ending with the production of about 30 aircraft. The plane did not have permanent weapons. The RWD-17 aircraft was created as a machine intended for intermediate training, on which pilots would change after the courses on RWD-8 aircraft. In general, the machine was similar to the RWD-8, but it used many new mechanical elements, including: a different, more powerful engine was used in the RWD-17. In 1938, a motorized version with floats (RWD-17W) was also introduced Gate Sh-14a with 160 HP. In the years 1938-1939 the basic version of the RWD-17 went to several Polish flying clubs and the aviation school in Świdnik. Several planes in the RWD-17W version went to the equipment of the Polish Navy. During the September campaign in 1939, several RWD-17s were sent to Romania, where they were later used until the 1940s.
