The Nakajima Type 91 was a Japanese fixed-undercarriage monoplane fighter with a fixed undercarriage from the interwar period. The drive - in the basic version - was provided by a single one. licensed engine Bristol Jupiter VII 520 hp. Serial production began in 1931, which lasted until 1934, which resulted in the production of about 450 examples of this aircraft. The deck armament consisted of two 7.7 mm machine guns. The Type 91 was commissioned by the Japanese army command in 1927. In order to shorten the time of research and development works, the Nakajima factory relied on the construction of the new machine on its other prototype machines from the so-called NC series. In the course of serial production, two versions of the aircraft were created: the first (Type 91-1) was much more numerous, and the aircraft of this version were powered by a Bristol Jupiter engine. Later, the Type 91-2 version entered service, with a domestic production power unit (Nakajima Kotobuki 2 engine). Series production of the Type 91 was carried out at the Nakajima and Ishikawajima plants. Airplanes of this type took part in the so-called the Shanghai Incident of 1932. From 1936, it was replaced in line by Kawasaki Ki-10 fighters.
