The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 (another designation: DC-9-87) is a mid-range, twin-engine, low-wing, American-made passenger jet. The drive is provided by two Pratt and Whitney JT8D-217C or JT8D-219 . The flight of the prototype took place in December 1986, and serial production lasted from 1987 to 1992. McDonnell Douglas MD-87 belongs to the MD-80 passenger aircraft family, which are a far-reaching modernization of the DC-9 aircraft. The main changes concerned the elongation of the structure, increased passenger compartment capacity, the use of new engines and richer avionics. The MD-87 was designed as a medium-range machine that could take from 109 to 130 passengers on board. Its hull, compared to other MD-80 series machines, has been shortened by approx. 5 meters. The standard maximum range of the MD-87 is 4,390 km, with an option to extend it to 5,400 km. Airplanes of this type have been or are used by airlines from countries such as the United States or Austria.
