The type 96 cannon (jap. 96 Shiki) is a Japanese, automatic, light 25 mm anti-aircraft gun from World War II. The first prototypes of this weapon were made in 1935, and its serial production was carried out in the years 1936-1945. About 33,000 of these weapons were produced in its course. The initial velocity of the missile was up to 820 m / s, and the theoretical rate of fire - up to 260 rounds per minute. The effective range of the shot was around 3,000 meters. The 25mm Type 96 cannon was developed for the needs of the Japanese Navy as the primary light anti-aircraft weapon for naval ships. In essence, it is a licensed, though modernized, version of the French Hotchkiss cannon of the same caliber. It differed from its predecessor mainly because of the barrel that used fire suppressors made by the German company Rheinmetall-Borsig AG. Initially, the weapon was produced in a duplicate version, in 1941 a triple version entered production, and in 1943 - a single version. This weapon was first mounted on Asashio-class destroyers. While at the beginning of the war in the Far East, the weapon was doing quite well, from the turn of 1942/1943 its shortcomings became visible - first of all, the low speed of guidance, weak targeting system and low practical rate of fire.
