The HMS Dreadnought (S101) was a British nuclear powered fighter submarine (SSN), the keel of which was laid in June 1959, was launched in October 1960, and was completely completed in April 1963. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 81 m, width 9.5 m, with an underwater displacement of about 4,000 tons. In turn, the maximum speed while submerged did not exceed 28 knots. The unit had 6 bow 533 mm torpedo tubes and was capable of carrying up to 24 pieces of weapons. The HMS Dreadnought (S101) was the first ever nuclear powered submarine in the history of the Royal Navy. Thus, it marked a new chapter in the construction of this type of ship in the British Isles. This is probably why it got its name as a vivid reference to another milestone in British shipbuilding - the battleship HMS Dreadnought from the beginning of the 20th century. HMS Dreadnought (S101) was built at the Vickers Armstrong shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness in the North West of England. The unit was created with significant American aid, which included the delivery of the S5W nuclear reactor. One of the most notable episodes in HMS Dreadnought (S101) service was the arrival of the North Pole in March 1971. The unit was decommissioned in 1980.
