Triomphant is the name of a class of French nuclear-powered submarines - carriers of ballistic missile (SSBN) missiles, which were built from 1986 to 2010. In total, there are four units of this class - all of them are active. The Triomphant-class ship is 138 m long, 12.5 m wide, and has a displacement of approximately 14,300 tons. The maximum underwater speed is around 25-26 knots. The main armament of units of this class consisted of 16 ballistic missile launchers (M45 or M51 type) and four 533 mm torpedo tubes. The Triomphant class ships were constructed and put into production in order to replace the Redoutable class ships in the line. The new ships have a slightly different hull structure, which provides them with better hydrodynamic properties. It is also assumed that they are able to achieve a significantly greater immersion depth (approx. 400 m compared to approx. 300 m in the Redoutable class) and certainly develop a higher underwater speed. They are also characterized by richer electronic and - probably - hydroacoustic equipment. The most important difference, however, is in the main armament - Triomphant-class ships carry ballistic missiles with a greater range and greater firepower than Redoutable-class ships. Ships of this class are also considered the most expensive in the world, because the entire program of their development and construction cost over 17.1 billion euros! And the price of the ship's unit is estimated at EUR 3-3.1 billion.
