N700129 SUBMARINE TYPE 209/1400

Type 209 is the name of a class of German diesel-electric fighter submarines, produced on a large scale for export. The first unit of this type was completed in 1971. A single ship of subtype 209/1400 is about 61 meters long and 6.2 meters wide. Underwater displacement does not exceed 1,450 tons, and the maximum underwater speed is around 21-22 knots. The armament consists of 8 533 mm torpedo tubes. Type 209 was developed at Ingenieurkontor Lubeck (IKL), in cooperation with Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, based on the experience gained in the production and operation of units of classes 201 to 206. Compared to classes 205 and 206, it has many common design solutions, such as such as: "swim-out" torpedo tubes, oblique, bow, retractable rudders or a single, five-blade propeller. From the beginning, it was also assumed that the Type 209 would be dedicated to activities in the coastal zone, but with the possibility of seagoing. Undoubtedly, this class of submarines turned out to be very successful, offered a highly favorable cost-effect ratio and became a kind of export hit of the German shipbuilding industry in the 1970s and 1980s, and ships of this type were purchased by the navies of countries such as : Argentina, Greece, Colombia, Peru and Turkey.
