7 X - CRAFT SUBMARINE

Type X is the name of a class of British miniature diesel-electric submarines of the Second World War. Vessels of this type were launched in 1942 / 1943-1944. In total, 20 ships of this type were built. The length of the Type X was 15.62 m, width - 1.75 m, and the underwater displacement was only 30 tons. The maximum underwater speed was up to 5.5 knots. The ships of this type could be armed with two mines with a total weight of 3,200 kg. The first work on new British submarines started in 1941. It was assumed that the future units would have a short range, and would be towed to the scene by traditional submarines. Mines with a time fuse were preferred as armaments, allowing the Type X unit to sail away from the action site. The most famous action in which the Type X ships took part was Operation Source in September 1943, when 6 ships of this type entered one of the Norwegian fjords where battleship Tirpitz was stationed and led to its serious damage and de facto shutdown for many months. At the moment, a single ship called X24 is on display at the museum in the city of Gosport in Great Britain.
