USS Hammann (DD-412) was an American destroyer from the interwar period and World War II. The keel for this unit was laid in 1938, and the launch took place in February 1939. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 106.2 meters and the width was 11 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 2,200 tons, and the maximum speed was approx. 35 knots. The armament at the time of the launch consisted of, among others, five 127 mm guns, eight 533 mm torpedo tubes and depth charge launchers. USS Hammann was one of the 12 Sims-class destroyers. This type of vessel was designed and built to complement and partially replace the Benham-class destroyers. Compared to their predecessors, they were slightly larger, slightly slower, but had stronger artillery and torpedo armaments. Belonging to this class USS Hammann was in the Atlantic when the US joined World War II, but was quickly redirected to the Pacific. The unit, a few months after ferrying, took an active part in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. The destroyer also took part in the Battle of Midway in June of the same year. However, in the course of this battle, she was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-168 on June 6, 1942.
