Resolution is the name of a class of British nuclear-powered submarines - carriers of ballistic missile (SSBN) missiles, which were launched between 1966 and 1968. In total, four units of this class were built. All of them were decommissioned in the period 1992-1994. The Resolution class ship was 129 m long, 10 m wide, and had a displacement of approximately 8,400 tons. The maximum underwater speed was around 23-24 knots. The main armament of units of this class consisted of 16 Polaris A-3 ballistic missile launchers and six 533 mm torpedo tubes. Resolution ships were constructed on the basis of extended and modernized hulls of Valiant class ships. Both classes of ships also used many of the same components and elements of equipment. In order to reduce costs and speed up the entire project, it was decided to purchase ballistic missiles from the US. So the Royal Navy behaved completely differently here than the French Marine Nationale, which built its Redoutable ships based mainly on native technologies. Nevertheless, the Resolution class ships have similar combat capabilities as the French and American SSBN ships of the Lafayette or Redoutable classes. They were replaced in the British Navy by Vanguard-class ships.
