Onami (DD-111) is a modern Japanese missile destroyer, the keel of which was laid in 2000, launched in September 2001, and commissioned in 2003. The total length of the ship is 151 meters and 17.4 meters wide. Full displacement is about 6,300 tons, and the maximum speed is around 30-31 knots. The destroyer's armament includes: a single 127 mm Mark 45 gun, two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx sets, a single 32-rail VLS Mk. 41 or two 324 mm triple torpedo tubes. The ship has a single Mitsubishi SH-60 helicopter. Onami (DD-111) is one of the Takanami class destroyers. Units of this type were designed and built based on the Murasame class of units. Compared to their predecessors, they differ mainly: a much more modern fire control system (OPS-24B), a completely new sonar, as well as changed artillery and missile weapons. At present, they are complementary to the Congo and Atago class units, rather serving as anti-sea and underwater target units. The second vessel of this class, the Onami (DD-111), was built at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard in Nagasaki. The unit, shortly after entering service - in 2004 - was sent to the Indian Ocean to support American operations in Iraq. In 2007, the destroyer conducted international naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal, and in 2009 in the Japanese Sea - together with South Korean ships. In 2010, the destroyer operated in the area of Somalia, conducting anti-piracy activities and - above all - protecting civil shipping in this area. In 2011, he took part in a rescue and humanitarian operation in the northern part of Honshu, caused by the earthquake and tsunami. Onami (DD-111) is in active service.
