British naval cannon anti-aircraft Vickers QF 2-pdr Mark II and VIII caliber 40 mm was developed shortly after the outbreak of World War I, and its modernized version (Mk. VIII) in 1923. The initial velocity of the shell of the fired Mk. VIII, it was about 730 m / s. the maximum range of this weapon was estimated at approx. 6,200 meters. British naval cannon anti-aircraft Vickers QF 2-pdr Mark II was developed for the Royal Navy as a new light anti-aircraft weapon with the highest possible rate of fire. Its original version (Mk. II) was used on single sites. However, after the end of World War I, a much more perfect version was created, designated as Mark VIII. It was characterized by significantly better reliability, refined automatics, and was also most often used in coupled versions - with 4 or 8 barrels. In the 8-barrel version, the weapon was commonly known as "pom-pom" and was used on many Royal Navy ships in the interwar period and World War II. It is worth adding that both the Mk. II and Mk. VIII were widely exported to, inter alia, Japan, Poland and Italy.
