Oyodo (DE-231) is a modern Japanese escort destroyer, also classified as a corvette. The keel for this unit was laid in March 1989, the launch took place in December of the same year, and entry into service took place in January 1991. The ship is 109 meters long, 13 meters wide and has a draft of 3.7 meters. Full displacement reaches approx. 2,550 tons and maximum speed - approx. 27-28 knots. The armament includes: a single 76mm OTO Melara cannon, a single ASROC missile launcher, 8 Harpoon missile launchers or a single 20mm Vulcan Phalanx CIWS set. The Oyodo (DE-231) is the third of six Abukuma-class escort destroyers built. The Abukuma-class ships were designed and built to complement, and later replace, primarily Yubari-class destroyers in the line. They put a lot of emphasis on the capabilities of the ZOP (anti-submarine warfare) and the ability to combat surface targets. At the same time, many improvements have been made to classes such as Yubari, Isuzu and Chikugo. Above all - in relation to the Yubari-class ships - Abukuma-class ships are slightly longer and wider, and have a clearly greater displacement. They still have a gym in the CODOG configuration, but it is more modern and more effective than the one installed on Yubari type units. Many changes have also been introduced in the field of electronic equipment - especially in the field of fire control systems, broadly understood electronic warfare and data exchange. It is also often indicated that Abukum class units are the first in the JSDMF to possess certain stealth characteristics. It is worth adding that the Oyodo (DE-231) got its name after the Japanese light cruiser of the Second World War.
