700-67 TAMANDARE - BRAZILIAN IRONCLAD 1866

Tamandare was a Brazilian armored gunboat, the keel of which was laid in May 1865, launched in June of the same year, and commissioned in September 1865. The length of the ship at the time of launching was 51.4 m, width 9.19 m, and displacement - about 750 tons. The maximum speed was up to 8 knots. At the time of launch, the unit was armed with a single 70 lb. rifled gun, three 68 lb. smoothbore guns, and two 12 lb. smoothbore guns. The Tamandare armored gunboat was built in Arsenal de Marinha da Corte in the city of Rio de Janeiro for the needs of the Brazilian Navy, which aimed at acquiring a unit of simple design with a low draft, capable of carrying out intensive shelling of enemy coastal positions. The best possible armor of the ship was also sought. Finally, a unit with a very shallow draft was created, suitable for operation in the coastal zone and on rivers, with the weapons concentrated in a centrally located casemates. The unit was very heavily used during the wars of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay with Paraguay in 1864-1870. After the war, the unit served in the Mato Grasso State Flotilla. The gunboat was decommissioned in 1879.
