700-61 NUMANCIA - SPANISH IRONCLAD, 1863

Numancia was a Spanish armored frigate under which the keel was laid in 1862, launched in November 1863, and commissioned in 1865. The length of the ship at the time of launching was 95.6 m, width 17.3 m, and displacement - about 7,300 tons. The maximum speed was 12-13 knots. At the time of launch, the unit was armed with 40 68-pound smoothbore guns with a caliber of 203 mm. The Numancia armored frigate was ordered from a French shipyard Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranee for the Spanish Navy. The name of the ship commemorated the siege of Numantia of 134-133 BC. The unit went down in history as the first in its class to circumnavigate the globe. She also took part in the Chinese-South American War in 1864-1866, as well as in suppressing the revolution in Spain in 1873 (Cantonal Resolution). The vessel remained in service until 1912, and the ship sank in December 1916 while sailing to the shipyard, where it was to be scrapped.
