THE FIRST BRITISH SUBMARINE HOLLAND I

Holland is the name of a class of British diesel-electric submarines from before the First World War. Units of this type remained in service in the years 1903-1914. In total, 5 ships of this type were built. The length of the Holland-class ship was 19.46 m, width - 3.58 m, and the underwater displacement - 123 tons. The maximum underwater speed was up to 7 knots. The ships of this type had a single 360 mm torpedo tube. Holland-class units were the first submarines in active service with the Royal Navy. The decision to build these ships, which was designed and developed by John Holland (hence the name of the class), was made in 1900. The new ships, however, encountered problems in construction and were not built in a flash. In addition, they were relatively simple and rather different from ships of this type, constructed, for example, in France. However, they were perfect for all types of tests and experiments with new weapons. It was only in their course that the Royal Navy realized how great a danger to its surface ships could come from under the surface of the seas and oceans. They also served as the basis for the design of A-class units. The Hollandy did not take part in World War I. At present, a single ship of this type is on display at the museum in the city of Gosport in Great Britain.
