USS Monitor (LSV-5) was an American large landing ship (Vehicle or LSV) from the Second World War. The keel for this unit was laid in October 1941, and the launch took place in January 1943. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 140 meters and a width of 18.3 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 9,200 tons, and the maximum speed was approx. 21 knots. The armament at the time of launch consisted of four 127mm cannons (two single and one twin), four 40mm twin cannons and 20 single 20mm AA cannons. The presented vessel was one of the Osaka-class landing ships, and the name was of course commemorated by the famous monitor from the Civil War period (1861-1865). The USS Monitor (LSV-5) was constructed at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in Pascagoula, Mississippi. It is worth noting that its construction was quite clearly dragged on, which resulted from the redesign of the unit after launching. Despite this fact, the unit took an active part in landing operations in the Philippines in 1944, then being part of the 3rd Fleet. It operated in this region of the Pacific from October 1944 to January 1945. In April of the same year, she took part in the landing operation in Okinawa, serving in this campaign from its first day. In May 1945, the USS Monitor (LSV-5) was dispatched to the US and then made several voyages between Pearl Harbor and the US West Coast. Shortly after the end of World War II, the ship was converted into a hospital unit, and in May 1947 she was assigned to the US Navy reserve.
