SMS Sachsen was a German armored ship with a sail-steam propulsion from the second half of the 19th century. The keel for this unit was laid in 1875, the launch took place in 1877, and the entry into service - in 1878. The overall length of the ship was 98.2 meters and a width of 18.4 meters. The displacement was around 7,700 tons and the maximum speed was around 14 knots. The deck armament, at the time of launch, consisted of 6 260 mm guns, 6 87 mm guns and 8 37 mm guns. SMS Sachsen was the leading unit of the class of ships of the same name, consisting of a total of four units. The AG Vulcan shipyard in Szczecin was responsible for the construction of this ship. Units of this class, including, of course, SMS Sachsen, were designed rather to operate in the waters of the Baltic and North seas, against the French or Russian fleets. Thus, ships of this class had good armor, relatively strong artillery, and a good maximum speed, but they would hardly be able to independently operate in ocean operations. In the course of her service, SMS Sachsen did not take part in any major clash, and her service was spent on routine exercises and maneuvers and representing the German flag in foreign ports. The unit was decommissioned in 1910, but it was not scrapped until 1919.
