Brasil was a Brazilian armored-deck corvette, which was laid under the keel in 1864, was launched in December of the same year, and entered service in 1865. The vessel was 63.4 meters long with a width of about 10.8 meters. The displacement reached around 1,500 tons and the maximum speed was around 10-11 knots. The ship's armament included: 4 Whitworth 70-pounder 140 mm guns and 4 206 mm 68-lb guns. The unit was created on the basis of plans and design solutions taken from Europe, whose individual countries at that time significantly expanded their fleets with armored ships. It was designed in France, in the Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranee office, and was built by the shipyard in La Seyne-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean Sea. The unit was distinguished by the amassing of artillery in one, central, armored casemates, thus becoming a ship resembling a central barter ironclad. The ship took part in the war with Paraguay of 1864-1870.
