Contemporary French Armed Forces (fr. Forces armees francaises) are made up of the army, the navy, the air force, the French National Gendarmerie and the National Guard. In terms of numbers, the most important component is the land army (French Armee de Terre), which consists of approximately 115,000 soldiers. Considering the variety of tasks facing the French army, as well as the fact that they conduct quite frequent expeditionary operations (outside France), they have numerous armored vehicles of various types in stock. Among them are the heavily armed wheeled reconnaissance vehicles AMX-10 RC and ERC-90. The basic armored personnel carriers (APCs) are VBCI vehicles (approx. 630 vehicles in line) and vehicles from the VAB family (approx. 2600 vehicles in line). The French Armee de Terre also has around 1,450 VBL vehicles in the line, which can be described as lightly armored wheeled infantry transporters with high mobility.
