Huroni are one of the indigenous Indian tribes living in North America. Their original headquarters are in the Great Lakes region on the border of the USA and Canada. The main source of income for the Hurons was agriculture. They mainly cultivated tobacco and maize, which they barter traded with other Indian tribes for, for example, meat and furs. In the first half of the 17th century, the Hurons allied with France and were lucrative brokers in the leather trade, and at the same time relied on French aid in the fight against the Mohawk tribe. Probably their number reached then about 30,000 people. In the middle of this century, a great conflict broke out between the Hurons and the Iroquois, which led to the ignominious defeat of the former. As a result of the defeat, the Hurons left their original headquarters and moved to the area of today's Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. The modern Huron population in the USA and Canada is estimated at about 9,000 people.
