The Royal Scots Grays is a British cavalry regiment that was established in 1707 and functioned as an independent unit until 1971. It is worth adding that the roots of the unit date back to the end of the 17th century. It was originally called The Royal North British Dragoons, but was already known in the common sense Scots Grays. Officially, however, the name "Scots Grays" was given to the unit in 1877. The unit underwent its baptism of fire during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), it also entered action during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) or during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The regiment fought particularly intensively in the second of the aforementioned wars, taking part, inter alia, in the Battle of Bergen in 1759. Interestingly, the unit did not take part in the US War of Independence (1775-1783) and very limited in the wars with revolutionary France and Napoleon (1792-1815), but took part in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 during which they conducted one of the most famous charges of this battle. After 1815, the unit took part in many armed conflicts, including the Crimean War (1853-1856) and the Second Boer War, but above all in both world wars. The unit remained independent until 1971.
