Lakota Indians, Sioux and Dakota are indigenous Indian people living in the Great Plains of North America. In Indian dialects, these tribes were collectively called Dakota, Lakota or Nakota. In English, there is one collective name - Lakota or Sioux. The latter is de facto derived from French. The Lakota Indians at the end of the 15th century probably inhabited areas in the present-day southeastern states of the United States, but by the 17th century they are already on the Great Lakes. In the middle of the 18th century, they made another journey to the Great Plains. At that time, the Lakota Indians made a living by hunting, but also working on the land. In the early nineteenth century, the Lakota began to interact with the US government, which systematically removed them from their hitherto occupied territories. Of course, this led to conflicts and wars. The most famous clash between Lakota Indians and American troops was the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876, in which US cavalry units suffered a disastrous defeat, and General George Custer was killed in the battle. The leaders of the Indians were the Seating Bull and the Crazy Horse. Yet despite this success, the Indians were increasingly pushed from their lands. The last, unsuccessful, Lakota uprising took place in 1890-1891. At present, the descendants of these Indians live in the states of North and South Dakota.
