The FAMAS is a modern 5.56 mm French-made assault rifle. The first prototype examples of this rifle appeared in 1967, but the weapon entered service in 1979 and was produced until 2000. The weapon - in its basic version - measures 75.7 cm, with the weight of the rifle only at 3.61 kilograms. The initial velocity of the projectile is up to 960 m / s, and the effective shot range - up to 300 meters. The FAMAS was developed and put into production as the new assault rifle of the French Army. The weapon was indirectly influenced by the American M16. Also in the FAMAS rifle, it was decided to introduce the caliber of 5.56 mm instead of 7.62 mm, but the bullpup system was also used, clearly distinguishing the French design from the American one. This system assumes the location of the breech chamber behind the trigger mechanism. As a result, the weapon does not have the correct stock. In the course of production, several variants of this rifle were created, including: F1 (basic version), G1 (version with improved ergonomics) or G2 (version adapted to NATO 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition). The FAMAS rifle is used by the French army, where it is nicknamed "Trumpet", but is also used by the armed forces of such countries as: Djibouti, Gabon, the UAE and Senegal.
