Moonbase Alpha is an imaginary lunar base from the universe of Cosmos: 1999. The base was built and is operated by the International Lunar Finance Commission (abbreviated: ILFC). The base was - in its universe - commissioned in February 1997, but its construction started in 1983. The crew consists of about 300 people. The main tasks of people living and working in the Alpha base include scientific research in the field of geology, astrophysics and chemistry. The base itself has a decidedly peaceful and civil character. It is also completely self-contained, has its own communications system and a small flotilla of spacecraft (Eagle Transporter) that are hangared beneath the lunar surface. The base is constructed in the shape of concentric circles, the focal point of which is a building located in the center that acts as a command base. Its diameter is about 4 kilometers, and the lowest levels of the base are about one kilometer below the surface.
