Izumo-taisha (also known as Izumo-oyashiro) is one of the oldest temples (shrines) of the Shinto religion in Japan. The exact date of the erection of the shrine is very difficult to establish. When it comes to the chronology of the creation of Izumo-taisha, it is only certain that at the time of writing the first official history of Japan (Kojiki) in AD 712, the temple certainly already existed and was considered a very old structure. Perhaps - although this is only an assumption - the building was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. The building, in its unchanged form, continues to this day, but from time to time it is dismantled and erected from scratch from new wood in the same form as before. The present building was built in 1744. In the main sanctuary of the temple complex, part is devoted to the god Okuninushi. The place is especially venerated by the followers of Shinto, and Izumo-taisha is considered one of the most important shrines of this religion in Japan.
