Rokuon-ji, commonly known as Kinkaku-ji (Polish: Golden Pavilion), is a Japanese Buddhist religious building located in the city of Kyoto in western Japan. The temple was built at the end of the 14th century by the shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga as his private residence and residence. After his death, it was transformed into a cult object at the beginning of the next century. Unfortunately, shortly after, it was completely destroyed in the course of the so-called the Onin War, which led to the overthrow of the Ashikaga shoguns. However, Rokuon-ji was rebuilt relatively quickly, and, just as importantly, it survived the US strategic air raids of World War II. Unfortunately, in the summer of 1950, the temple was destroyed for the second time as a result of a devastating fire started by a mentally ill monk. Due to the cult, but also important place in the cultural heritage of Japan, Kinkaku-ji was rebuilt in 1955. Over 30 years later, the roof of the building was also covered with gold flakes. Currently, Kinkaku-ji is one of the most important buildings in the city of Kyoto and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
