The MBT-70 (another designation: KPz 70) is a US-West German prototype Main Battle Tank from the Cold War period. In total, 14 prototypes of this car were built in the 1960s. The vehicle, in its original version, never entered production. In the German version, the drive was provided by a single engine Daimler-Benz / MTU MB 873 Ka500 1500 hp and in the American version - the engine Continental AVCR V12 with 1470 hp. The basic armament was to be a single 120mm tank gun or a 152mm cannon-launcher, a single 20mm cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun. The MBT-70 / KPz 70 was developed as a joint venture of defense companies from the USA and Germany, with the full approval of the armed forces of both countries, as a new, highly advanced MBT for the US Army and Bundeswehr, intended to replace the M60 and Leopard 1 vehicles. many innovations: its suspension was hydropneumatic, which ensured very good maneuverability in the field, the armor was double-layered and provided a high degree of protection against HEAT shells. In addition, the entire crew was transferred to the vehicle, which made it possible to lower its silhouette and optimize the inclination of the armor plates. However, a significant excess of the initially assumed costs meant that in 1969 Germany withdrew from the project, and the entire project was finally abandoned in 1971. However, many experiences and concept solutions used in the MBT-70 / KPz 70 were used in the great 3rd generation tanks: M1 Abrams and Leopard 2.
