Sychrov Castle is now an impressive residential building erected in the Czech Republic, and more precisely in the Liberec Region. The first building on the site of the present palace was erected in the 15th century, but it was rebuilt in the next century. From 1628, Sychrov Castle was owned by Albrecht Wallenstein - one of the most important and outstanding leaders of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). After the death of this leader, at the end of the 17th century, the building passed into the hands of the Lamotte de Frintropp family and was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Significant changes took place in the first half of the nineteenth century, when Sychrov Castle was rebuilt again - this time in the Romantic spirit, and soon neo-Gothic. The castle fortunately survived both world wars, but in 1945 it was nationalized forcibly, and five years later (1950) this magnificent building was opened to the public. It is worth adding that at present the palace is still open to the public, and its chambers contain a rich collection of French paintings.
