Sd.Kfz. 304 (it. Sonderkraftfahrzeug 304) Springer was a German tracked carrier of WWII explosives. The first prototypes were probably created in 1944, and serial production continued in the years 1944-1945, ending with the production of about 50 examples of this atypical vehicle. The drive was provided by a single motor Opel Olimpia with a capacity of 1.5 liters. The vehicle was capable of carrying up to 300-330 kilograms of explosive charge. Sd.Kfz. 304 was developed based on the chassis and suspension of the Kfz.2 Kettenkraftrad vehicle. The main change was the removal of the front wheel, adding an armored casemates that housed the engine, driver's cab and an explosive. Springer's armor was up to 10 mm thick. Its main task was to destroy fortified enemy resistance points. Combat use Sd.Kfz. 304 was very risky - it consisted in the driver driving it over a distance of about 1500-2000 meters from the target, and then directing the vehicle by radio to the object that was to be destroyed. The vehicle turned out to be not very successful due to problems with radio control, as well as the very high production costs - far too high for a de facto single-use weapon.
