PW-5 Smyk is a Polish, one-seat, World Class sports glider with a laminate structure in a medium wing configuration. The glider was developed at the Warsaw University of Technology under the supervision of Dr. Roman Świtkiewicz, and the production was carried out by plants in Świdnik (1994-2001) and Bielsko-Biała (from 2001). The prototype flight took place in 1992. Serial production started in 1994 and by 2010 about 300 examples of this glider had been produced. The curb weight is 190 kilograms. PW-5 Smyk as a World Class glider to take part in the competition announced in 1987 by OSTIV. In the course of its design, particular emphasis was placed on the lowest possible production costs and the far-reaching simplicity of the entire structure. In total, 42 projects entered the competition, and the winner was the PW-5 Smyk. This aircraft also owns several international gliding records established at the beginning of the 21st century. A further development of the PW-5 is the PW-6 double glider, which was flown in 1998.
