408W is the designation of a series of open-type wagons, often colloquially called coal wagons, intended - as the name suggests - for the transport of coal, but also various types of ores or sands. The wagons were produced in the years 1979-1982, 1997 and 2004-2005 at the Zastal plant in Zielona Góra and at the Wagon Factory in Ostrów Wielkopolski. The empty weight of a single wagon was 20 tons. The total length of the wagon with buffers is 14.04 m. The maximum speed of the wagon is 100 km / h. In total, about 14,000 copies of this wagon were built. The 408W wagon was designed and implemented for production as a new, heavy coal wagon for the use of PKP. It was built in a four-axis system, with two pairs of double-leaf doors - one on each side of the wagon. The 408 W model was characterized by a very simple design and was cheap to produce and operate, but the commencement of its mass production in the Zielona Góra plant was associated with their expansion and increasing the area of assembly lines. These organizational changes led, for example, to the end of production of the 409Da locomotive. It is worth adding that since 1994 several hundred 408W wagons have been converted from side-tilt coal wagons to front-tilt wagons.
