The British town of Chatham is located in Kent, on the River Medway, in South East England. The shipyard in Chatham (called Chatham Dockyard) was established in the first half of the 16th century, and it is quite commonly assumed that during the reign of Elizabeth I Tudor (probably from 1567) the shipyard began to be called the Royal Navy Dockyard. In the 70s and 80s of the 16th century, the shipyard was significantly expanded and modernized under the supervision of Matthew Baker - one of the most important shipbuilders in England in the 16th century. In the following century, the importance of Chatham Royal Navy Dockyard grew significantly, and in the course of the three Anglo-Dutch Wars of 1652-1674, the base was de facto the main repair base for the Royal Navy units. However, due to the silting up of the Medway River and the marked increase in the bases in Portsmouth and Plymouth, the role of Chatham began to decline slightly in the 18th century. Nevertheless, in the 1770s and 1880s, the base, together with the shipyard, had four dry docks, and at the end of the century it employed nearly 1700 people! As a curiosity, it can be noted that it was in Chatham that the flagship of Admiral Nelson under Trafalgar was built - HMS Victory, which was launched in 1765.
