2S9 NONA

The first prototypes of the 2S9 Nona self-propelled mortar were created in the late 1970s, and serial production began in 1979 and continued until 1989. The 2S9 self-propelled mortar is powered by a single 240hp 5D20 engine. The main armament of the vehicle is the 120 mm 2A60 mortar and a single 7.62 mm machine gun. The 2S9 Nona self-propelled mortar was developed for use by the Soviet airborne forces. It was based on the BTR-D chassis. The designation of the 2S9 determined the attention paid by the designers to the low weight of the vehicle (only about 8 tons!) And high maneuverability, which was ensured by a relatively good engine and drive train, and the ability to overcome water obstacles without any special preparation. The 2S9 mortar was used in combat in Afghanistan, where it received very positive opinions and turned out to be a highly successful design. The 2S9 Nona self-propelled mortar was exported to many countries, including Syria, Venezuela and Bangladesh.
