205 L.S.N.S. 'GOVERNOR MOORE' 1862

The CSS Governor Moore was a steam gunboat belonging to the Confederate States of America fleet during the Civil War (1861-1865). The unit was launched in 1854, and its admission to the Confederation Navy took place at the beginning of 1862. The displacement of the vessel was about 1,200 tons, and its crew consisted of 93 people. They were armed with two 32-pounder guns. The CSS Governor Moore - under the name "Charles Morgan -" originally served as a civilian shipping and trade unit. It was only in January 1862 that the unit was taken over by the Confederation fleet and, apart from changing its name, it was quickly converted into a gunboat. The unit distinguished itself in a battle with US Navy units in April 1862, when it struggled to repel a Yankee attack to capture New Orleans. First, the gunboat ran aground the USS Varuna, then attacked the USS Cayuga. However, in the course of this CSS attack, Governor Moore came under fire from overwhelming Union forces and sustained severe damage. The unit, after stranding, was set on fire by its crew on April 24, 1862.
