Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo Lighthouse is the lighthouse located today at the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico at Cape Rojo. The building was erected during the Spanish rule over Puerto Rico, and its commissioning dates back to 1882. The building was built on a limestone cliff about 40 meters above sea level. Both the building and its foundation were made primarily of stone. The lighthouse tower is octagonal. The Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo lighthouse is located at the very difficult to navigate and dangerous entrance to the Mona Strait, which in turn is the passage from the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Its range of white light is 18 nautical miles (NM), or about 33.5 kilometers. The work of the lighthouse was fully automated in 1967. The building is still active and fulfills its role.
