The Kurenas is a type of flat-bottomed sailing boat that could be found in the Baltic Sea until the beginning of the 20th century. Probably, this type of boat was developed in the Middle Ages, perhaps in the 12th-13th centuries. However, they are quite well attested in sources from the modern era, especially from the 17th century. Units of this type were particularly eagerly used by fishermen from East Prussia and Lithuania. Kurenas boats were used both as fishing boats, but also for the transport of goods and people. Due to their construction, boats of this type were perfect for sailing both at sea and in the coastal zone. They were mainly characterized by a very shallow draft, good seaworthiness and relatively large capacity. They also had a characteristic raised bow and sides curved inwards. Most often, the kurenas boat was no more than 12 meters long and its draft was about 40-50 centimeters.
