The 9K52 Łuna-M (NATO designation: FROG-7A) was a Soviet short- and medium-range tactical missile system. The system used the 9P113 launcher and the 9M21 missile. The missile was a single-stage solid-fuel missile with a range of 12 to 68 kilometers, capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 500 kilograms. The first, still prototype, examples of the 9K52 Łuna-M system appeared in the early 1960s, and the system was probably fully operational in 1964. The 9P113 launcher was based on the experience learned from the operation of the 2P16 launcher, which allowed for a radical shortening of the design work. The new pile launcher was characterized by less vibration during the rocket launch and was mounted on the chassis of the ZiŁ-135LM truck. Several development versions of the 9M21 rocket were created, three of which were the most important. The first is the 9M21 F, which uses a 200 kg accumulation and demolition head. A version of the 9M21 B was also created, carrying a single nuclear warhead with a power of up to 100 kT. The next development version was the 9M21 K, with a cartridge head. In addition to the above-mentioned, there were also versions with school or chemical heads. The 9K52 Łuna-M system has been delivered to many foreign operators, including Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Poland, Romania and Hungary. It was used in combat in many armed conflicts during the Cold War, including the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) or during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan (1979-1989).
