The Nieuport IV was a French sports, reconnaissance and fighter plane in a monoplane configuration with a fixed undercarriage. The drive in the basic version was provided by a single engine Gnome Omega with 50 HP . The prototype flight took place in 1911. Serial production of this aircraft continued in the years 1911-1915. The Nieuport IV was developed by the French aviation constructor Edward Nieuport on the basis of his earlier aircraft - Nieuport II and III a. The new machine was to be a light sports and racing aircraft. Due to the good - for those times - performance of the plane, the armed forces of tsarist Russia became interested in it, which purchased a license and adapted the machine to the needs of military aviation. The Nieuport IV very quickly entered the equipment of the air forces of other countries, including France, Japan, Sweden and Italy. In the course of serial production, three development versions of the Nieuport IV aircraft were created. The first was the Nieuport IV G, the first model to use the Gnome engine, but with a power of 100 HP. The second is the Nieuport IV Hydro version with a float undercarriage and engine power increased to 200 HP. The third is the Nieuport IV M, which is a military version, powered by different versions of the Gnome engine ranging from 70 to 100hp. This version performed mainly reconnaissance and, to a lesser extent, hunting tasks. It was also characterized by a structure adapted to quick assembly and disassembly in field conditions.
