The city of Plymouth began to play a huge role for the British Royal Navy at the end of the 17th century, when a naval base was located in its immediate vicinity in Davenport (now a district of Plymouth). The official name of the port and shipyard complex is (today, anyway) HMNB Devonport , i.e. His / Her Majesty Naval Base Devonport. The location for the new base was chosen personally by the King of England, Charles II Stuart in 1676, and the construction of the shipyard began in 1691. The shipyard already played a significant role in the 18th century and was responsible for the renovation, repair and construction of new units for the Royal Navy. The port facilities and its equipment were also systematically enlarged and modernized. The dynamic development of HMNB Devonport can be proved by the rapid increase in the number of employees in the base: from approx. 730 people in 1711 to over 2400 people in 1730! During the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), there were already four dry docks and five slipways at the base. It is worth adding that HMNB Devonport still plays a significant role in the Royal Navy as its important base and repair yard for nuclear powered submarines.
