The cathedral basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Płock is the oldest monument in this city and has been called the basilica church since 1910, and this title was awarded by Pope Pius X. The roots of today's basilica date back to 1130, when bishop Alexander of Malone ordered the destruction of the earlier church and He began the construction of a completely new Romanesque temple with three naves and a transept, and a chancel ended with an apse. The cathedral was consecrated as early as 1144. Unfortunately, in the 13th century it was destroyed by the Prussians, and later by the Lithuanians, and had to be reconstructed - this time in the Gothic style, which can be seen even today in the facade of the temple and towers. In the 16th century, the temple was almost completely destroyed by fire, which led to its reconstruction in the years 1531-1534, but in the spirit of the Renaissance, as indicated by the dome above the transept. In the eighteenth century, the church once again underwent reconstruction, although more narrow than two centuries earlier, in the classicist style.
