Chkalov was a Soviet light cruiser of the Cold War period. The start of construction of this unit took place in August 1939, but it was not launched until 1947, and it was commissioned in 1950. The length of the ship was 201 meters and 19.7 meters wide. Full displacement reached approx. 14,300 tons and maximum speed - approx. 33 knots. The deck armament, at the time of launch, consisted of 12 152 mm guns, 8 100 mm anti-aircraft guns, 28 37 mm cannons, and mine tracks. Chkalov was one of the cruisers of Project 68. This type of unit was developed on the basis of the Kirov-class design of the mid-1930s. Compared to their predecessors, they had different main armaments (12 152 mm guns instead of 9 180 mm guns), but they were also larger. Chkalov was built at the Baltic Shipyard in Leningrad, and its very long construction time was associated with the siege of this city during World War II. Before entering service, the vessel was dismantled, among others, with torpedo armament, and modern communication equipment was installed. Chkalov remained in the line until 1981, serving mainly in the Baltic Fleet.
