MARMON-HERRINGTON MK.II MIDDLE EAST TYPE

The Marmon-Herrington Armored Car was a South African armored car from the Second World War. The first prototypes of the vehicle were created at the end of the 1930s, and serial production continued in 1940-1944, ending with the production of about 5,800 vehicles. The car was powered by a single engine Ford with a power of 85 or 95 HP. The armament was in the Mk. And two 7.7 mm Vickers machine guns. The Marmon-Herrington Armored Car was commissioned by the government of the South African Union, which decided to create an armored car of the native design. The works developed very slowly until 1939, but after the outbreak of World War II, they accelerated significantly. The vehicle used many components imported from the USA, Canada and Great Britain. Four development versions of the vehicle were created in the course of serial production. The first mass-produced was the Marmon-Herrington Mk. I, which had a rear-wheel drive. Shortly thereafter, the Mk. II, which already had four-wheel drive, and the Boys anti-tank rifle was added to its armament. Later, the Mk. III, which was a slightly modernized version of the Mk. II. The last mass-produced version of the Marmon-Herrington was the Mk. IV, with the engine located in the rear part of the car, body redesign, the main armament was a 2-pounder 40mm gun placed in a rotating turret. Marmon-Herrington Armored Car vehicles were used by South African troops, but also by British, Polish and Greek troops. They fought primarily in North Africa in 1940-1943.
