HMS Lion was a British battlecruiser of World War I and the interwar period. The keel for this unit was laid in 1909, the launch took place in August 1910, and entry into service with the Royal Navy took place in June 1912. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 213.4 meters and a width of 27 meters. Full displacement reached approximately 31,400 tons, and the maximum speed was approximately 28 knots. The armament at the time of the launch consisted of: eight 343 mm guns, 16 102 mm guns and two 533 mm torpedo tubes. HMS Lion was the first of two battleship-class battleships of the same name - the Lion. Line cruisers were created and entered into service in the Royal Navy on the inspiration of the First Sea Lord of the Admiralty - adm. John Fisher. The emphasis in these units was placed on the highest possible speed and armament on a par with battleships, but at the expense of armor. As a result, units of this type clearly dominated the heavy cruisers of the German Hochseeflotte, but were vulnerable to main artillery fire of the German battleships. One of such cruisers - HMS Lion - took an active part in the First World War. He began his combat route with the Battle of Heligoland (1914) and later took part in the Battle of Dogger (1915) and in the greatest naval battle of the war - the Battle of Jutland (1916) in which he avoided destruction and happily survived until end of struggle. In May 1922 it was withdrawn from service, and two years later it was scrapped.
