The Ch-28 (NATO designation: AS-9 Kyle) was a Soviet air-to-ground missile designed to destroy radar stations from the Cold War period. Production probably started in 1971. The Ch-28 was a liquid fuel missile with a range of up to 110 kilometers, capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 160 kilograms and reaching a speed of up to 3 Ma. The AS-9 missile was developed at the MKB Raduga design bureau, based on other missiles created by this bureau - Ch-22 and KSR-5. The AS-9 was the first in the USSR, a missile designed from scratch to destroy enemy radar stations. The Ch-28 was a target homing missile carrying a conventional warhead, although it is believed that a nuclear warhead was also developed for this missile. Originally, the AS-9 was planned to be used by the Yak-28 aircraft, but eventually it was used by the Su-7B, Su-17, Su-24 and Tu-22M. The missile is not currently in use by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. During the Cold War, it was certainly exported to Iraq and Vietnam, and perhaps to Syria, Libya and Yemen.
