USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) is an American Dock Landing Ship, the keel of which was laid in August 1981, was launched in June 1983, and commissioned in 1985. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 190 m, width 26 m, with a full displacement of about 16,400 tons. The maximum speed exceeds 19-20 knots. The armament of the unit includes: 2 25mm Mk.38 cannons, 2 20mm Vulcan Phalanx CIWS sets or 2 RIM-116 RAM launchers. The USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) is the leading unit of the class of landing ships of the same name, the Whidby Island. The ships included in it were developed to first complement and then replace the Anchorage class. Compared to their predecessors, they have been significantly enlarged, have more extensive defensive weapons, as well as a completely different engine and a much more powerful propulsion system. Whidby Island units can carry out operations with the use of LCAC hovercraft, various types of amphibious vehicles and landing boats, but also helicopters and V-22 powered-lifts. The USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) was built at the Lockheed Shipbuilding Company in Seattle. Soon after entering service, in 1986, she took part in exercises of NATO forces, and in 1989, she provided assistance to the victims of Hurricane Hugo in the Caribbean Sea. In 2001, the ship secured the operations of US troops in Afghanistan. It is assumed that the ship will be placed in reserve in 2022 or 2023.
